I have a personal office downtown Indianapolis at Starbucks in a Marriott. I have officially established this as my zone because all the Starbucks workers know my name plus I have a designated chair next to an outlet with high-speed internet (OK, I made the designated chair part up). But seriously, I know most of staff and I am assuming they think I stay at the hotel which I don't (I am an absolute mooch).
One of the cleaners was in the restroom and asked me in Spanish if I spoke Spanish ( I only caught the word hablas) . I was half tempted to say sí but I know all of five words. After I said no shaking my head, I couldn't help but ask why? He mentioned that I looked Spanish with my dark hair and then started talking about his son in school.
Wait - I am a 6'2'', pale skin, puffy black hair, brown eyed... you get the picture, I do not appear to have any Spanish decent whatsoever. I walked out smiling and in shock. The question was from left field and slightly odd, but it made me question myself. It was on my mind the rest of the day. I even asked others which led to laughter (even one spit take).
He asked me a totally ridiculous question but it made me do three key things: (1) think (2) respond (3) ask why. It just started up a conversation. Imagine that a question that you ask, regardless of how crazy the question is, might be able start up a conversation and allow you to connect with someone on a whole new level. Hey! Who knows? you can find out more than you would ever imagine by just asking.
The ask (no pun intended): go ask someone a crazy question. I do not care who, just do it and see what you get from it.
FYI - I will return back with my example in a later post.
